NHS Health Checks

The NHS Health Check is a sophisticated check a patient’s heart health, working out the risk of developing some of the most disabling – but preventable – illnesses that also directs patients who need it to the best source of addressing any symptoms.

The NHS Health Check is affectionately known by our patients as a “midlife MOT”. It checks that some of your body’s most important systems are running smoothly.

Crucially, your NHS Health Check can detect potential problems before they do real damage. Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia. The good news is that these conditions can often be prevented.

The NHS Health Check assesses the risk of developing these health problems and gives patients personalised advice on how to reduce it.

It’s free of charge, including any follow up tests or appointments.

How do people get an NHS Health Check?

The NHS Health Check is aimed at adults aged 40-74. If you fall in to this age group and are not already being reviewed by your GP for a circulatory condition you can expect to be invited for an NHS Health Check every five years.

NHS Health Checks are provided by Calderdale GP practices under contract with Pennine GP Alliance.
